Reflection Effect Photoshop Tutorial

Sunday Aug 31, 2008

Looking to create a “reflection” effect in photoshop? Well you found a great tutorial for it!

Step 1

First we’ll start off with just a plain white document with size 400px by 150px.

Step 1

Next I’ll demonstrate how to do the reflection effect with a normal image, however this can easily be done to text as well. I grabbed an image off google and cropped it so it looks like below (be sure that the image is no larger than it looks below and that it doesn’t extend above the border).

Step 1

Next right click on that layer that you just created for the image, and duplicate the layer. Now go to Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical. This will flip the image vertically. With the new layer selected (the one that you just flipped), press the down arrow until the two images meet at their top/bottom edges, and it looks like a complete reflection.

Step 1

Now you have a reflection effect! You can also add a shaded effect to the reflection. Click on the 2nd layer, and go to Select > Load Selection. This will select the area of the layer. Next select the gradient tool, select white as your color, and then go to the menu below:

Select the options as seen above (for the shade, select white to transparent).

Step 5

Next with your selected area, you can now use your gradient to make an effect like below.
